The BEST Mixing Advice For Music Producers | MMP w/ Amond Jackson

Listen on

Episode notes

That's why I sat down with mixing engineer Amond Jackson (credits: Future, Young Thug, Snoop, Rick Ross, & more) to talk about some of the mixing mistakes producers are making with their beats and the hacks you can use to fix them so that you can make more 💵 with your beats.

❌ Too much reverb ❌

Reverb is supposed to create spatial awareness for the listener and shouldn't be thrown all over your beat, so to make sure you're not drowning out the important elements in your sounds, you can use an EQ to filter any unneeded frequencies out of your reverbs.

❌ Bass Blanket ❌

Specifically, when it comes to 808s and steady basslines, many producers tend to create a "Blanket of sound" that doesn't allow the brain to "reset itself" when it hears low end.

Instead, you can try cutting the tail of your 808s by using a gate to make your low end more dynamic.

❌ Wearing too many hats at once... ❌

"When you're making beats, just make beats. When you're mixing a song, just mix the song."

This was one of the biggest points that AJ brought up to me.... the most efficient producers and engineers in the game have two hats: a mixing hat and a producing hat.

If you focus on too many things at once (i.e. trying to make a beat and fully mix it at the same time), your attention is split and your efficiency goes out the window.

Instead, try to mix your beats completely after you've arranged it the way you like it.

And if you wanna learn some more of the mixing hacks that the top-performing producers are using in their own beats...

...then check out all the other tips that AJ mentioned on the newest edition of the Midi Money Podcast!
